My grandmother was Bulgarian — can I claim citizenship, and how long does it really take?

A grandparent is enough. Bulgarian law allows naturalization on grounds of origin for anyone with at least one ascendant — parent or grandparent — who was a Bulgarian citizen. The origin route has major advantages: no residence requirement, no language exam, no renunciation of US citizenship. The work is in the documents, in two chains. First, prove your grandmother was a Bulgarian citizen: her birth record from the Ruse municipality registers is the anchor, and a local researcher or lawyer can usually extract it even for the 1930s. Her emigration-era papers help corroborate identity. Importantly, her later US naturalization does not break your claim. Second, prove the unbroken family chain to you: her marriage certificate, your parent's birth certificate, your parent's marriage certificate, your birth certificate. Every non-Bulgarian document needs an apostille and certified Bulgarian translation, and names that shifted spelling over the decades (very common with emigres) may need explanatory affidavits or corrections first — this is where most delays are born. You file at the Ministry of Justice in Sofia or via a Bulgarian embassy, attend a short interview, and add a clean criminal record certificate. Realistic timeline: three to nine months to assemble the documents, then commonly 12 to 24 months for the decision, plus a few months to receive the citizenship certificate and then apply for your Bulgarian ID and passport. Two to three years end to end is the honest expectation; the one-year claims are marketing, the five-year stories usually involve document problems.
