My D visa was rejected once — is it worth reapplying, or should I appeal?

A single refusal is not a black mark and does not create any ban. Consulates refuse D visas mainly for fixable documentation problems, and insufficient or wrongly evidenced funds is the most common one. Reapplying with a corrected file is almost always the better route. On appeal versus reapplication: you can challenge a refusal before the Bulgarian administrative courts within 14 days, but the process takes many months, requires a Bulgarian lawyer, and even a win just sends the file back for a new decision. Unless you believe the refusal was genuinely unlawful, fixing the file and reapplying is faster and cheaper, even though you pay the roughly 100 euro fee again. For the funds issue specifically: consulates want money that is liquid, in your name, and stable. Investment portfolios are often discounted because their value fluctuates. Before reapplying, move enough into an ordinary savings or current account and let it sit there so your statements show a stable balance, ideally alongside a Bulgarian bank account holding funds — many consulates expect one for the pensioner route. Pair that with your pension award letter showing regular income, translated and apostilled where required. One important rule: always disclose the previous refusal if the form asks. Hiding it is treated far more harshly than the refusal itself.
