What do dentists actually cost in Bulgaria? My UK quote nearly gave me a heart attack

Asked by Helen · August 14, 2026

Before leaving London my dentist quoted me over 3,000 pounds for a crown and two fillings, which sealed my decision to wait until we got to Bulgaria. We are now settled in Plovdiv. What should I expect to pay here for normal dental work - checkups, fillings, crowns, maybe an implant down the line? Is the quality actually good, or is cheap cheap for a reason? And does NHIF cover any of it?

Your instinct to wait was financially sound - dentistry is one of the biggest cost gaps between the UK and Bulgaria, and quality in the cities is genuinely good. Realistic private prices in late 2026 in a city like Plovdiv: a checkup or consultation 20-30 euro, professional cleaning 40-60 euro, a photopolymer (white) filling 40-70 euro depending on size, root canal treatment 100-200 euro per tooth, a metal-ceramic crown 180-250 euro, a zirconia crown 300-400 euro, and a complete implant with crown typically 800-1,200 euro. So your 3,000-pound London quote - a crown and two fillings - translates to roughly 300-400 euro here for equivalent private work. This price gap is exactly why dental tourism into Bulgaria is a real industry: people fly in for implant work and still save money after flights and hotels. On quality: city clinics are modern, materials are the same European brands used in the UK, sterilization standards are solid, and many dentists - especially younger ones - speak English and have trained or worked abroad. As with anywhere, choose on reputation: expat groups and Google reviews converge quickly on the well-regarded clinics in Plovdiv, and a good sign is a clinic that offers a written treatment plan with itemized prices before starting - the established ones all do. On NHIF: if your contributions are paid, you are entitled to a small annual package of subsidized dental care - basically an exam and a couple of basic treatments per year with a copay - but it is minimal, and virtually everyone, Bulgarians included, simply pays privately for real dental work.
