Good news first: renewals happen entirely in Bulgaria at your local Migration Directorate office — the consulate is never involved again. But renewal is not a rubber stamp: you are essentially showing that the grounds for your permit still exist. For the pensioner route that means a refreshed set of core documents: evidence your pension is still being paid (a current pension letter or statements), a Bulgarian bank statement showing sufficient funds, proof of accommodation (your notary deed, or a current registered rental contract), valid health insurance covering Bulgaria if you are not yet in the state system, and your passport plus current permit card. Documents you already proved once, like your criminal record certificate, are generally not required again for a routine renewal. Local offices do vary a little in what they ask, so bringing more paper than needed is the safe play. On timing: file no later than 14 days before your current permit expires — that is the legal deadline, and missing it can mean a fine and complications. You can apply up to about three months early, and with ten weeks left you are in the sweet spot now.
