How realistic is it to actually learn Bulgarian as an adult with a full-time job?

Asked by Mark · August 14, 2026

I have been in Sofia six months and my Bulgarian consists of about twenty words, mostly food. Everyone in the center speaks English to me, which is convenient but means I never practice. I am 41, work full-time, and was never good at languages in school. Honestly, what can someone like me realistically achieve in a year or two? And what actually works, versus what people just say works?

Realistic expectations, from watching many expats try: with 3-4 hours a week of real effort, a working adult typically reaches solid A2 in 12-18 months - meaning you handle shops, taxis, neighbors, simple admin, and can follow the gist of conversations. B1, where real conversations live, usually takes 2-3 years at that pace. That may sound slow, but A2 is the level that transforms daily life here, and it is absolutely achievable for someone who was bad at school languages - motivation and consistency beat talent at these levels. Some encouragement about the language itself: Bulgarian is arguably the easiest Slavic language for English speakers, because it dropped the case system that makes Russian or Polish brutal - word order and logic feel surprisingly familiar. The hard parts are the verb system and vocabulary volume. Cyrillic, which scares people most, is genuinely a weekend job. What actually works: one-to-one lessons with a tutor, in person or on iTalki (8-15 euro per hour), twice a week - this outperforms group courses and apps because you cannot hide. Apps are fine as a supplement; the Bulgaro app is built specifically for Bulgarian and beats the big-name apps, which barely support the language. And you must engineer practice, because you have discovered the Sofia trap: locals switch to English at the first stumble. Counter it by opening in Bulgarian and pushing through the wobble - most people switch back if you persist - and by practicing where English is thinner: markets, small shops, older neighbors, villages. Set a concrete goal like doing your entire weekly shop in Bulgarian by month three. Two years from now, the difference between twenty words and A2-plus will feel like living in a different, friendlier country.
