Moved to a village near Veliko Tarnovo - how do I build a social life out here?

Asked by Steve · August 14, 2026

My wife and I, both late fifties from Lincolnshire, bought a house in a village about twenty minutes from Veliko Tarnovo in the spring. The renovation kept us busy all summer but now winter is coming and I will admit it: we are a bit lonely. Our Bulgarian is basic, the village is mostly older folks, and I do not want us to become those Brits who only ever talk to each other. What actually works out here?

You have picked one of the best possible regions in Bulgaria for exactly this problem - the Veliko Tarnovo area has the largest rural British and international community in the country, thousands strong across the surrounding villages, so a real social scene already exists within twenty minutes of your door. Plugging into it: the regional expat Facebook groups are the notice board for everything - quiz nights, car boot sales, charity events, curry nights in village pubs run by Brits, seasonal fairs. Attend two or three things and the same faces start recurring; this community is famously welcoming to new arrivals because everyone remembers their own first winter. Veliko Tarnovo itself adds a cafe and restaurant scene, markets, and cultural events year-round. But your instinct about not living in a British bubble is the right one, and the village side matters more for daily happiness. What works with Bulgarian neighbors: accept everything offered - the tomatoes, the jar of honey, the glass of rakia - and reciprocate with something you grow, bake or fix. Reciprocity is the entire social contract of village Bulgaria, and refusing hospitality reads as coldness. Learn greetings and twenty more phrases; effort in Bulgarian, however clumsy, converts neighbors from polite to warm remarkably fast, and older villagers have endless patience for bad Bulgarian paired with good will. Ask for help occasionally - advice about your fruit trees, where to buy wood - because being helpable is how you join a village. Check whether your village or a neighboring one has an active chitalishte (community hall) with events. And plan for winter deliberately: a weekly town day, a standing pub quiz, one hosted lunch a month. Loneliness out here is a scheduling problem more than a people problem.
