What do winter heating bills really look like in Bulgaria?

Here are real numbers for late 2026. Sofia district heating (toplofikatsia) charges around 73 euro per MWh, and a typical 65-80 square meter flat in an older block burns roughly 1-1.5 MWh in a cold month, so expect about 70-110 euro monthly December-February, less in the shoulder months. Note the billing quirk: you pay estimated equal instalments through the season, then an annual reconciliation (izravnitelna smetka) in summer that can be a refund or a top-up. Electric heating: household electricity costs around 0.12-0.13 euro per kWh. The standard and smartest setup is inverter air conditioners used as heat pumps - they produce roughly three units of heat per unit of electricity, so heating one room costs perhaps 30-60 euro a month, and a whole small flat maybe 100-150 euro in the coldest months. Old-fashioned resistive panel heaters cost three times that for the same warmth - avoid them as your main heat. The village house scenario: wood remains the cheapest heat in rural Bulgaria. Firewood runs roughly 80-120 euro per cubic meter delivered, and a typical house burns 5-8 cubic meters over the winter, so 500-900 euro for the whole season - but buy it in summer when it is cheaper and dry, and expect the labor of stacking and stoking. Pair the stove with an air conditioner for mornings and shoulder months. The wildcard in both scenarios is insulation: an uninsulated panel block or old village house can double these figures.
